Cosplay Contests
This is one of my favorite contests to attend because its organized and ran very well by the staff! The theater used to hold the contest is perfect for the attendants as well as the cosplay participants and provides a perfect atmosphere for everyone to enjoy. The Judges are very supportive and let participants show off their work of art but also let them provide a small skit if they so choose based on the cosplay they are providing for judgement. The way the staff organizes and lines up the competitors to be ready for on stage performances and judges is simple and structured so that everyone gets their fair shot at being judged. The judges themselves have proven to be very fair in their decision making of choosing winners based on the categories listed. They also comforted and thanked the other cosplayer participants who did not place knowing that their hard work did not go unnoticed and appreciated them for their participation.
This convention is one of my favorites however the contest held here needs work. The reason being is that this particular contest is pre-judged before the contest is even held. In my opinion that's not only unfair but unprofessional. Judging cosplayers before the event has even begun makes the event seem like a pre-scripted contest. The fact that the winners are chosen right after the last performer exits the stage because of the pre judging were noticed by the attendants and the competitors. The judges didn't even allow the competitors anytime to perform a small skit like most cosplay contests do was also a huge let down that made a lot of cosplayers exit the competition before even going on stage. Multiple guests including myself have issues complaints about they way the contest has been ran. I understand the basis of a contest being winners and losers and also not being upset about not placing in contest. Performing a small skit based on your cosplay brings passion and dedication to your craft and should also be a judging factor. To simply go on stage and pose does not give the attendants a good show as takes away the feel of a contest. I believe that every cosplay contest should be judged properly and not feel rigged or have the winners already chosen before the contest begins. This is cosplay not WWE. This has been a ongoing issue with the current contests organizers and judges with the exception of the one year that Superhero's Unlimited judged the contest and it was done the proper way. Which is the reason HV Cosplay Contest doesn't have a lower score.
This NJ convention holds a very fair judged event in their cosplay contest! The competitors are lined up outside the judging room. this way when the cosplayers enter the guests who are attending can view each competitor one at a time without visually knowing who is next. I've been both a attendant and competitor and I'm very happy how this contest is organized. They allow smaller skits then most contests but the judges do ask question about each cosplay to see what gave them the passion or idea to bring that cosplay to life. The judges are very fair in their decision making and makes their choice on the winners after each competitor poses for the them and the event photographer. Pre-judging to them is a unfair way to hold a event and makes the participants feel cheated. This definitely a contest to both attend or compete in!

This contest is the biggest event in the east coast! NYCC is already known as one of the biggest cons in the world. It's only fair to say that its cosplay contest is just as big! Some of the best cosplayers in the world compete for the top prize and the respect of the cosplay community. Of all the contests I've attended and cosplays I've seen doesn't come close to the skill of NYCC's cosplayers and contest. This is the show to go to! Enough said
This contest was a bit unorganized but since it's their only there 2nd year I cant be too critical. The show was very small and very short. In total maybe 20 people showed for the contest. What confused me was the fact we had to choose a category between beginner, intermediate and professional. The problem with that was being it gave no way to clarify how we met they category requirements. Which to be honest was confusing and could give unfair advantages. That is something they need to work on. However the judges were fair in their decision making. They showed every competitor their respect and thanked them for attending and was an overall pleasant show.

I had a lot of fun at this contest! The event had over 40 participants and the judges where very enthusiastic about seeing the competitors take the stage. I like how the contest host brought up each participant by giving a short interview before playing to the judges and the crowd! Not a single person in the audience or participant did not have a good time while the show took place. There where a lot of laughs smiles and support from everyone. This con does two shows a year so you have twice to opportunities to see a great cosplay contest!
Mid-Hudson's first cosplay contest was very well organized. The amazing J3nnard Cosplay once again hosted this contest and showed what an excellent host she is. The show had an adult contest (17+) and a children's contest (16 & Under). The judges did a great job judging the event by showing how diverse and fair they were by selecting appropriate winners for each of the categories. Mid Hudson does not pre-judge. Which made the event much more professional and gave the contestants a better chance of winning. Not to mention it provides people the true experience of being in show that takes the time and appreciation of judging each cosplay on the spot. Rather than take that away from the contestants in a prejudged event like other shows.
